INTRODUCTION:
Welcome to the B&O Caboose Encyclopedia, volume 3. If you have the first two volumes, you know that our format is starting with the modern cars and working our way backwards in time. Volume 1 covered the modern pool cabooses and was heavy on "Chessie System" coverage. Volume 2 had extensive coverage on B&O pooling and how it was implemented and tracked on the railroad. That book also covered cabooses built in the 1950s and 1960s.
In this Volume 3 we push the envelope back even farther in time, delving into the steel bay-window cabooses built in the 1930s and 1940s. Those 1930s cars were typically referred to as "experimental" in nature and led to the mass production of the road's "wagon-top" style in the 1940s.
Those "experimental" cars of the 1930s are our favorite B&O cabooses even though there were only eight of them. So we have pulled out all of the stops in presenting coverage that is as extensive as possible. We wish we had the original Mechanical Department files on these cars, but, alas, they were gone by the time we began researching in the Mechanical Department. We have therefore had to rely on extensive photo coverage of these cars with bits and pieces from other B&O files.
The first car was of unique construction (C-2500) and met a terrible fate. The second car (C-2501) was the first "wagon-top" caboose and also was one-of-a-kind. Cars three through eight were built as the same class but car three (C-2502) received a special paint scheme and was a member of B&O's much-heralded "Freight Train of Tomorrow".
Even those last six cars varied from the production wagon-tops that came in volume in the 1940s. The early cars had those unique "porthole" end windows, and they had a better overall look to them than the production cars of the 1940s (the I-12s) because they sat higher off the ground and did not have the side skirts that the I-12s did.
We are excited to provide in this volume the results of new research indicating the colors that B&O cabooses were painted, moving the timeline back several years over what previously was known. See page 153.
You will see the term neoletter (or neostyle letter) used in this edition. We use this term because it is the term used by the B&O Mechanical Department. What is a neoletter? In today's venacular it would simply be a letter with a standard format so whatever information is in the letter, all such letters would have the same "look" or format.
