    Description

Clear the Tracks, the Story of an Old Time Locomotive Engineer
    by Joseph Bromley.
The author began as a 'callboy' and at the age of seventeen was chucking timber into one of the last of the old wood-burning engines. At twenty he was promoted to the right-hand side of the cab, the youngest engineer on the road. He worked in the days when you could pull a freight train onto a siding for a few hours while the crew went fishing, for timetables were for the crack passenger trains only. But highballing home was ticklish business, for the hand brakes didn't always work to perfection. Highly entertaining reminiscences that also show the growth of railroading from the early days to the 1940s.
1943, hard bound, 288 pages, no dust jacket, excellent used condition.
