WELCOME
Welcome to the National Railway Museum, York. Here you will see the world's pre-eminent railway collection, which traces the evolution of the railway from the origins of the steam locomotive in Britain nearly two hundred years ago to the railway renaissance of the late twentieth century, epitomised by the Channel Tunnel.
The Museum's collections range from the most powerful of steam locomotives to Victorian railway timetables, from contemporary models to a prolific archive of photographs.
These collections bring to us the history of railways, provide glimpses into the future and offer an opportunity to explore some of the most challenging and romantic episodes of the past two hundred years.
This is an important time in the history of the National Railway Museum, with the opening of our newest gallery, The Works. Now visitors can view from an elevated walkway the Museum's conservation workshops, see work in progress on locomotives and rolling stock, and have access to our enormous reserve collections which have previously been hidden from view.
Plans are currently afoot to develop and expand the whole of the site of the National Railway Museum so that new developments in railways can be presented, as they take place.
Our staff want you to enjoy your time with us, so if you have any queries just ask and they will help you. One of the characteristics of the Museum is that exhibits are frequently changed, so there will always be something new to see at the National Railway Museum - please come back soon.
