    Description

Patrick Kelly is one of inspiration and appreciation. A young American designer of the 1970s and 1980s, Patrick Kelly began in a grassroots manner. Designs steeped in humor, imagination and African American folklore, he gained honor and appreciation by being admitted to the French Fashion governing entity 'Chambre Syndicale due Pret-porter-des Couturiers et des Createurs de Mode' after he'd moved to Paris in 1980 after a somewhat failed tenure in New York.
His origins were in the thrift shop world that afforded him a perspective and understanding. With such an influence, his own attributed imaginings gained the attention of Supermodel Pat Cleveland in 1979, who would go on to encourage his burgeoning career by sending him to Europe. France was good to him. He gained notoriety with boutique stock, celebrity attention, and fashion magazine covers.
His collections were avant-garde and wild. Eventually, his designs would find their way into Philadelphia Museum of Art.
1987, the fashion conglomerate Warnaco would absorb the line which would launch Kelly into the higher echelons. Such a status gained him affiliations and collaborations with Chanel, Dior, and YSL.
Despite his death in 1990, which would cancel his contract with Waranco, Kelly's Legacy remained notorious and prominent. His designs would find their way into the Brooklyn Museum, Jackson State University Library, and the Schomberg Library which possesses his sketch books.
